A BODY OF COMMENTS
Female bodies are hypervisible. Many women, being constantly self-conscious of their appearance and behaviour, receive a stream of commentary from mostly male friends, strangers, dates, and colleagues. The series of staged self-portraits, A Body of Comments, examines a personal experience of facing such remarks. The person in the pictures serves simultaneously as both subject and object. Alluding to the visual language of advertisement, the posters explore how the male gaze is imprinted in women's minds and bodies and how it can influence women’s sense of identity.
The project is designed to be extended into a public campaign, meaning the images can be used as posters and billboards in public spaces and online. The first series of printed posters was put in public spaces in London: at the office centre, on the facade of an art institution, and in public toilets. The next step will be launching a website where anyone can upload their photos, texts, and create their own posters.
